A Glimpse into the Mansion’s History
Long before The Fifth Avenue Hotel was imagined, the Mansion’s history began with one of New York society’s leading ladies, Charlotte Goodridge. In 1856, Ms. Goodridge commissioned the original construction of the mansion and carriage house. Exquisitely decorated with global treasures, the mansion was filled with the echoes of receptions and musical soirées, the highlights of New York’s social season.
In 1907, the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White constructed on the same site a stunning five-story Renaissance palazzo that stands today. It first served as the Second National Bank and has since housed a variety of businesses, evolving with the city over the years.
Over fifty years ago, the Ohebshalom family acquired this historic estate, including the neighboring lot once known as Charlotte’s Stables. Yet, it was Alex Ohebshalom, founder of Flâneur Hospitality, who envisioned a new chapter for the site ten years ago. His dream was to merge the timeless elegance of the Gilded Age with the dynamic spirit of modern New York, all through the eyes of a world-traveling flâneur enchanted by life, beauty, art, and culture.
